I spent many hours playing these sand falling games over a decade ago. The website provides a relatively detailed history of these applets. One of the most popular versions was referred to as the "Hell of Sand Falling Game". In the early to mid 2000s, there were a series of Java applet based games based around a falling sand mechanic - collectively known as "Falling Sand Games".
